Konami has confirmed it’s investigating new Performance Mode problems on PS5 and PS5 Pro after last week’s Patch 1.07 for the Silent Hill 2 remake introduced a host of new issues.

In a brief message posted to X/Twitter, the publisher confirmed that it was aware of the recent issues affecting Performance Mode on PS5 and PS5 Pro in Silent Hill 2 Remake following Patch 1.07, adding “our team is currently investigating these issues and looking into potential solutions. Thank you for your patience and understanding. We’ll share more information as soon as it becomes available”.

According to its patch notes, the update was intended to improve fog rendering, reduce shadow flickering, reduce movement-related visual artefacts, and boost overall image quality on both PS5 and PS5 Pro.

However, it didn’t take long for players to begin reporting issues, including crushed blacks and overly dark shadows specifically in Performance Mode that affected both the PS5 and the PS5 Pro. Quality Mode, which caps the frame rate at 30fps, appears unaffected.

We would like to confirm that we are aware of the recent issues affecting Performance Mode on PS5 and PS5 Pro in SILENT HILL 2 following Patch 1.07.

Reaction on Reddit has been largely negative. One user described the patch as introducing “the crushed black smear” in Performance Mode, along with worse shadow strobing than before and pixelation on James in mirror scenes, while also complaining that the update broke aspects of Quality Mode that previously worked fine.

Others questioned how the issues made it out the door at all, with one commenter simply asking: “How on earth did this pass QA?”

Similar complaints surfaced on forums like ResetEra, where users joked that the patch broke things even on base PS5, not just Pro, with one describing the affected foliage as looking “cursed”.

Konami did not provide a timeline for the Patch 1.07 fix.

It’s not the first time this remake has struggled to find its footing on Sony’s hardware. PS5 Pro support was a mess from the start. As Digital Foundry’s technical review flagged at the time, there were “glaring image stability issues not found on the standard PlayStation 5” and a “troubled PSSR upscaling implementation”, while one player at launch complained it was “really scummy to advertise a game as Pro Enhanced when it actually plays worse than the base unit”.

A patch addressing graphical glitches followed two weeks after the console’s launch, but problems persisted for so long that fans eventually assumed Bloober had abandoned fixes entirely, a theory the studio only pushed back on with a statement to Eurogamer confirming work was ongoing.

In Eurogamer’s Silent Hill 2 Remake review, I awarded it five out of five stars, saying it “expands Silent Hill 2 in just the right places, and gives careful attention to what it preserves”. It went on to sell a million copies in under a week.

Silent Hill: Townfall is out 24th September on PC and PS5. I recently played the opening five hours and really enjoyed what I saw, but felt – strongly – that there’s a lot more to Townfall than meets the eye.
