xAI shipped Grok Imagine Image 2.0 on August 7, 2026, making the new model generally available as the Quality Mode on grok.com/imagine and inside the company’s iOS and Android apps, according to the company’s announcement. The release lands as xAI lists its models under the SpaceXAI name, and it arrives with region-level editing tools, multi-image reference inputs, and a claim to the number-two spot on both major image arenas.

    What Image 2.0 adds

The release is built around editing as a first-class capability rather than a bolt-on. A magic wand tool changes only the region a user points at, segmentation selects precise areas to modify, and background removal exports any subject with transparency for use in other software. Multi-reference editing accepts up to five input images in a single generation, which removes the manual compositing step that previously required stitching sources together by hand. A smart-resize feature recomposes one image across nine aspect ratios, from a 1:2 tall banner to a 2:1 wide banner, with the model filling in the new frame.

xAI says the model was trained for fidelity across photography, design, and illustration, with an emphasis on planning typography and layout so dense, multi-part visuals hold together and small text renders sharply. The company also introduced templates — pre-configured workflows for tasks including product shots, professional headshots, e-commerce listings, game assets, and marketing posters — that package common image jobs into ready-made starting points where the user supplies only the inputs.

    Where it ranks

xAI reports that Image 2.0 ranks second in the world in both text-to-image generation and image editing, citing the Arena text-to-image and image-edit leaderboards as of August 7, 2026. The company notes its models are listed on Arena under the SpaceXAI name. In the standings published with the announcement, OpenAI’s gpt-image-2 holds the top position in both arenas, with xAI’s entries, listed as grok-imagine-image-2 (low) and grok-imagine-image-quality, placing behind it.

Those are the company’s own figures drawn from the public leaderboards, and the announcement does not include an independent evaluation beyond the Arena standings it cites. The claim puts xAI’s image line directly against OpenAI’s image models and Google’s Gemini image entries, the two labs whose names appear above and around it in the published rankings.

    The company behind the release

The SpaceXAI branding on the post reflects a corporate change, not a new entrant: xAI’s models are listed on Arena under SpaceXAI, and Anthropic signed a compute agreement with SpaceXAI on May 6, 2026; SpaceX (SPCX ) itself listed on Nasdaq in June 2026. Unite.AI covered the parent company’s financial picture earlier this week in SpaceX’s Cloud Business Tripled Its Revenue and It Still Loses Money, which detailed the AI segment’s losses even as the broader business grew.

Image 2.0 is available in Grok’s consumer products. API access is listed as coming soon, with no date given.
