Believe it or not, it’s already been over 10 years since FromSoftware released their final game in the Dark Souls series with Dark Souls 3, which launched in early 2016 and received its final DLC, The Ringed City, in early 2017.
Since then, FromSoftware has released several successor franchises to the DS series, such as Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Elden Ring, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive multiplayer game, The Duskbloods.

While fans may never receive a proper fourth Dark Souls game, there are still new stories being told in the DS universe and fans can dive into the universe’s latest tale next month with the comic Dark Souls: Mother of Mourning.
The Stories of Dark Souls Comics
The narratives of the Dark Souls games have always been cryptic, with players often being forced to read item, armor, and weapon descriptions to understand the background of the games’ characters and locations.
However, starting in 2016, Dark Souls fans were able to read clear stories set in the DS universe without having to read item descriptions or watch VaatiVidya YouTube videos with the first Dark Souls comic series, Dark Souls: The Breath of Andolus, written by George Mann, illustrated by Alan Quah, and published by Titan Comics.
This first four-issue series tells an original tale in the DS universe, following the knight Fira as she strives to end the Undead Curse, and this series was so successful that Mann and Quah went on to create several more DS comic series, following other original characters.
Mann and Quah weren’t the only authors to work on DS comics, however, as other writers like Ryan O’Sullivan would write series like Dark Souls: The Age of Fire that tied into events, characters, and factions seen in the games, with the aforementioned series following Silver Knight Arkon during the Age of Ancients and Age of Fire leading up to the events of the first game.
In late 2025 and early 2026, Titan Comics published its latest four-issue Dark Souls series, Dark Souls: Mother of Mourning, with Mann and Quah once again returning as writer and illustrator.
Dark Souls: Mother of Mourning Explained
Unlike Dark Souls: The Age of Fire, Dark Souls: Mother of Mourning isn’t tied to any specific DS game, character, or events and instead tells an original story in the DS universe.
Mother of Mourning follows the Grand Order of the Knights of Mourning, a seemingly selfless order who seek to stand up for those who can not defend themselves and uphold the law whilst battling Hollow creatures and other monsters.
Mother of Mourning specifically follows the life of Lucadeus, a high-ranking member of the Grand Order, as he and a few other knights set out to recover the soul of the legendary warrior, the Mother of Lillies, in order to rekindle the flame and restore balance to the world.

The last issue of the series was released in May and the entire series will finally be collected in Dark Souls: Mother of Mourning Vol. 1, which is scheduled to be published on Tuesday, September 29th, making the trade-paperback collection a perfect read for the upcoming Halloween season.
Meanwhile, Dark Souls fans can also read the other DS comic volumes online or by purchasing physical volumes at book stores and digital storefronts, with every prior DS comic series being featured in the 384-page Dark Souls: The Complete Collection comic.
