Granblue Fantasy Relink Company Announces New Publishing Label Aimed At Releasing Smaller Games Faster

While many of Cygames’ recent titles have been subject to favorable reviews and positive reception from fans, including Umamusume: Pretty Derby and Granblue Fantasy Relink, it is also true that many of its games have undergone public, lengthy delays in apparent searches for perfection. In the hope of being able to release more games unburdened by the expectations surrounding their mainline projects, Cygames has launched a new label called Cygames Edge, centered on small and mid-sized internally developed titles, with Where the Seeds Fall being their first project.

Granblue Fantasy Relink underwent a switch in developers from PlatinumGames before being brought in-house, eventually releasing 8 years after it was originally announced in Summer 2024 (it later received an expansion earlier this year). Project Awakening and Garnet Arena: Mages of Magicary, announced in 2016 and 2021 respectively, have undergone years of silence beyond assurances they remain under development.

Cygames Edge will focus not on the AAA projects that the rest of the company has developed, but on smaller games with leaner teams in order to release unique titles on a regular cadence. Where the Seeds Fall matches this: it promises a short, three-hour action-adventure platformer where you descend a giant tree, with replayability promised via additional modes including a time trial mode dedicated to speedrunners. It mirrors similar initiatives at other Japanese developers like GYAAR Studio under Bandai Namco, allowing a small group of developers to hone their skills on a self-contained project. In this case, Cygames developers have partnered with ZEREO Inc. to develop this game.

True to the plan to turn these titles around quickly, they were revealed during Sony’s recent State of Play and will be released digitally on Steam, PS5, and Switch 2 on November 5th. As a small experiment, and likely not the first, it’ll be interesting to see what else will come from Cygames Edge in the coming years.
