Elden Ring is in the conversation again thanks to its Tarnished Edition release on Switch 2. To coincide with the launch of the long-awaited port, FromSoftware released a DLC pack for other platforms including the extras from this Switch 2 Tarnished Edition.

Shortly after the DLC went live, however, players figured out a way to duplicate the items it contains, making it possible to give copies to players who don’t own the add-on. In response, FromSoftware has deployed an emergency Elden Ring patch, the sole purpose of which is to plug that security hole.

Patch 1.17.1 arrived Tuesday, 8th September on all platforms. “This update fixes an issue in multiplayer where, under specific conditions, DLC-specific items could be obtained when not normally eligible. No additional content is included,” the announcement post on X read.

The $5 / £4 Tarnished Pack includes two new starting classes – Idus Knight and Heavy Knight – as well as new armour sets and weapons. It also comes with new skins for your goaty horse mount Torrent.

The glitch worked by having a player who owned the DLC join the game of someone who didn’t, then drop the items for the other person to pick up. This didn’t remove them from the original player’s inventory, hence it being a duplication exploit.

Though the patch fixed the issue, it did not prevent item trading altogether. Items – including DLC-exclusive weapons and armours – can still be traded between players, but doing so will now correctly remove it from the original player’s inventory.

In Eurogamer’s impressions of Elden Ring on Switch 2, Kelsey Raynor was impressed with how the developer managed to get it all working on Nintendo’s console, even if the game’s performance isn’t flawless.
