    Verdict

The Samsung 1 Door Tall Fridge SpaceMax 386L RR70H39FCT is a compact fridge that uses SpaceMax technology to keep the walls thin, offering a huge internal space of 387L. More importantly, AI Precise Cooling works brilliantly, keeping temperatures stable (and food lasting longer) from top to bottom. With low running costs, this is an excellent choice for those who want to maximise fridge space.

    • Large internal space

    • Excellent temperature control

    • SmartThings integration

    • Could do with a bit more variety of shelving

    Key Features

    Introduction

While an all-in-one fridge freezer might be good for convenience, it’s not necessarily the best choice if you want the largest internal spaces and most flexibility. Buying separates, such as the Samsung 1 Door Tall Fridge SpaceMax 386L RR70H39FCT, can be the way to go.

This freestanding fridge has a huge internal capacity, yet will sit pretty much flush with your cabinets. Build the system out with additional fridges and freezers to get the total storage space you need.

    Design and features

    • SpaceMax design
    • AI Cooling
    • Very flexible internal space

Despite fitting into a regular 60cm slot, the Samsung 1 Door Tall Fridge SpaceMax 386L RR70H39FCT has a huge 387-litre cooling capacity, which should be enough space for even a large and busy family.

This model uses Samsung’s SpaceMax technology, which means the walls are thinner due to high-performance insulation, so you get more space for food. And, that space is neatly organised.

Five main shelves provide plenty of storage space, and four of them can be adjusted to suit different items, with plenty of space available for cans, bottles and jars.

One shelf has a split design, so half of it can be slid out of the way to allow for taller bottles on the shelf below. I was a little surprised that there’s no bottle rack on this model.

Samsung also provides five door pockets. They’re deep with tall sides, and sensibly spaced, so I could fit large milk cartons in the bottom, ketchup bottles in the lower ones.

Smaller items, such as butter and eggs, can fit into the top pockets.

There are then two drawers, the top one of which has a sliding humidity control. These drawers are both a good size, making it easy to store all the fruit and veg that you might want.

As this is a Samsung fridge, SmartThings is supported. As well as giving me control over the fridge’s internal temperature setting, I could also turn on AI Precise Cooling, where the fridge monitors usage patterns to help stabilise controls.

I also like the option to control the fridge light brightness and to turn on the night mode, using dimmed lights when it’s nighttime.

    Performance

    • Excellent temperature control
    • Low running costs

One difficulty with a tall fridge can be maintaining even temperatures throughout, but the Samsung 1 Door Tall Fridge SpaceMax 386L RR70H39FCT manages this brilliantly. Setting it to 4°C and then loading it with ice blocks to simulate a food load, I added temperature sensors and monitored internal temperatures.

Overall, the average temperature was 3.75°C, just 0.25°C below the target. Impressively, the top of the fridge wasn’t too warm, averaging 4.36°C (the bottom averaged 3.5°C). The standard deviation showed that most temperatures fluctuated +/-0.57°C, which is incredible: anything under 1°C is a very good result.

I also measured the temperature in the top drawer, which had an average temperature of 3.93°C, with a standard deviation of 0.26°C.

Measuring power usage, I estimated that the Samsung 1 Door Tall Fridge SpaceMax 386L RR70H39FCT would cost just £17.07 to run, or 4p per litre of space. That’s very cheap.

    Should you buy it?

You want a lot of fridge space

A brilliant layout, huge capacity, low running costs and stable temperature control make this a premium choice.

You need a freezer as well

If you want a freezer alongside your fridge, then you’ll need to look at a dedicated fridge freezer.

    Final Thoughts

If you want a standalone fridge that offers excellent stability, plenty of flexible space and very low running costs, the Samsung 1 Door Tall Fridge SpaceMax 386L RR70H39FCT is for you. Fancy an all-in-one model? Read my guide to the best fridge freezers instead.

    FAQs

    What is SpaceMax?

By making the walls thinner, while keeping the same insulation properties, this technology allows Samsung to make physically smaller fridges with large capacities.
